Engineering and infrastructure contractor Murphy has launched Murphy Capital, a dedicated corporate venture investment platform that will back early-stage and growth businesses developing technologies for the infrastructure sector.
The new platform marks a formal expansion of the group’s long-term investment strategy, combining patient capital with access to Murphy’s operational expertise, engineering capability and live infrastructure projects to help founders validate, deploy and scale new technologies.
Murphy said innovation has been central to its business over the past 75 years and that Murphy Capital has been established to support companies developing solutions capable of improving how infrastructure is designed, delivered and maintained.
Unlike traditional venture capital investors, Murphy Capital intends to provide portfolio companies with access to real-world project environments alongside strategic support, enabling technologies to be tested and commercialised within live infrastructure programmes.
The investment platform will focus on infrastructure-related technologies across five core sectors: energy, transportation, water, civil engineering, and digital and artificial intelligence. Within these markets, Murphy Capital has identified three priority investment themes: the future of construction, supply chain innovation, and greentech.
Murphy Capital expects to invest between £0.5 million and £8 million in early-stage and growth companies that have demonstrated product-market fit and are ready to scale. Beyond funding, portfolio businesses will receive strategic guidance, commercial support and opportunities to deploy their technologies across Murphy’s international infrastructure operations.
The platform is led by Mike Carpenter, Managing Director of Murphy Capital, who oversees investment strategy, capital deployment and portfolio management. Carpenter also leads investment activities across the wider Murphy Group, including Murphy Plant, Murphy Property and Murphy Infrastructure Investment. The leadership team also includes James Waddock as Finance Director, Nancy Walmsley as Group Legal Counsel and Liam Bousfield as Investment Analyst.
Murphy Capital said it is seeking to work with founders and businesses whose technologies have the potential to improve productivity, resilience and sustainability across infrastructure delivery.
The launch reflects a growing trend among major construction and infrastructure groups to establish corporate venture investment arms, giving emerging technology companies access not only to capital but also to industry expertise and live operating environments where innovations can be proven before wider commercial deployment.
