Construction has formally commenced on the NCH Discover Centre at Earlsfort Terrace in Dublin, marking the first on-site phase of a major redevelopment of the National Concert Hall campus under the National Development Plan and Project Ireland 2040.

The project was announced by Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport Patrick O’Donovan TD and Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran TD. The scheme is funded by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, with the OPW acting as design and delivery authority. Purcell Construction has been appointed as main contractor.

The NCH Discover Centre comprises a new 1,400 m² facility located within a restored heritage structure formerly used as part of University College Dublin’s Pathology Department. Works involve the adaptive reuse of the existing building fabric while integrating modern, universally accessible spaces to support music education, rehearsal and performance.

Scheduled for completion in early 2027, the centre will include two recital spaces, flexible rehearsal and workshop rooms, a dedicated gamelan room and upgraded access and circulation throughout. The project is positioned as a specialist cultural and education build, combining conservation, retrofit and new-build elements within a constrained city-centre site.

From a delivery perspective, the scheme represents the first construction package in a wider, multi-phase redevelopment of the National Concert Hall campus. The broader programme, which is currently progressing through the Infrastructure Guidelines design stages, will focus on conservation, refurbishment and expansion of the Earlsfort Terrace buildings to create a fully accessible, sustainable national music campus.

The OPW confirmed that the wider redevelopment will prioritise the re-use and enhancement of existing structures while retaining the architectural character of the historic complex, alongside the insertion of modern performance, rehearsal and technical facilities.

The NCH Discover Centre will be operated by the National Concert Hall and will house its learning and participation programmes, significantly expanding demand for specialist acoustic spaces, inclusive design solutions and flexible internal layouts capable of supporting a wide range of uses.

The project adds to a growing pipeline of publicly funded cultural and civic construction projects and highlights continued State investment in heritage-led redevelopment, retrofit and specialist fit-out works within Ireland’s built environment.
