New Divisional Garda HQ in Macroom moves to construction phase

Construction has commenced on a new Divisional Headquarters for the Cork County Garda Division in Macroom, Co Cork, marking a significant capital investment under the Garda Capital Investment Plan 2024–2030.

The sod was turned today by the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works Kevin “Boxer” Moran, and Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly.

The project will deliver a new two, three and four-storey Garda station building, alongside three standalone single-storey ancillary buildings and secure parking facilities. The overall development will provide 4,338 square metres of accommodation, including modern office space, conference facilities, staff support areas and custody suites.

The Macroom station will serve as the Divisional HQ for the Cork County Garda Division. It forms part of a wider national programme to modernise Garda infrastructure and expand operational capacity.

The works are being delivered under the current Garda Capital Investment Programme, developed following engagement between An Garda Síochána, the OPW and the Department of Justice. The programme identifies priority estate projects aligned with operational needs and projected demand.

Under the revised National Development Plan, €2.18 billion has been allocated to major capital projects across the Justice sector for the period 2026–2030. This represents an increase of more than €800 million on the 2021 NDP allocation.

Of this funding, €364 million is earmarked for new Garda buildings and a rolling programme of station refurbishments nationwide. A further €460 million is allocated for digital systems, including the rollout of body worn cameras.

The Macroom development is one of several projects progressing as part of the State’s strategy to upgrade policing infrastructure and provide modern, fit-for-purpose facilities to support frontline services across the country.
