Funding for Bruach na Mara estate brings Galway County Council’s total approvals under OPW scheme to 256 projects

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved €33,710 in funding for flood mitigation works at the Bruach na Mara Estate in Carna, Co Galway, under its Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
Minister of State Kevin “Boxer” Moran announced the funding approval following an application from Galway County Council. The funding will support a detailed survey of the estate’s surface water pipe network to help identify the extent of rehabilitation works required.
According to the OPW, the survey will involve the use of jetting, suctioning and recording equipment to assess the condition of the network. The findings will determine the scale and nature of any future improvement works needed to address local flooding issues within the estate.
The approval represents the latest investment under the OPW’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, which provides support to local authorities for smaller-scale flood mitigation and coastal protection projects where solutions can be identified and delivered within a relatively short timeframe.
Since the scheme was introduced in 2009, Galway County Council has secured approval for 256 funding applications, reflecting a sustained programme of investment in local flood resilience measures across the county.
The scheme supports local authorities in undertaking studies and works to address localised flooding and coastal erosion issues. Funding of up to 90% of project costs is available for approved applications, with projects assessed against economic, social and environmental criteria, including cost-benefit analysis.
The OPW noted that works which are normally the responsibility of local authorities are generally not eligible for funding. However, where such works also contribute to reducing flood risk to properties, partial funding may be considered.
Responsibility for progressing approved projects, including any subsequent rehabilitation works identified through the survey, rests with Galway County Council.
The funding approval comes as local authorities continue to seek targeted investment in smaller flood mitigation projects while larger flood relief schemes are being developed nationwide.
